How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Your Room
Share
Choosing the right rug size can completely change how a room feels. A well-sized rug helps connect your furniture, define the space and create a more balanced and welcoming interior.
Living Room
For most living rooms, choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and armchairs to sit comfortably on it. This helps bring the seating area together rather than making the rug appear separate from the furniture.
In larger living rooms, placing all the main furniture legs on the rug can create an even more luxurious and cohesive look.
Dining Room
Your dining rug should extend beyond the table so that the chairs remain on the rug when they are pulled out. As a general guide, allow approximately 60–75 cm beyond each side of the dining table.
Bedroom
A bedroom rug should provide softness around the bed while visually framing it. Larger rugs can sit underneath the bed and extend beyond the sides and foot, while smaller rugs or runners can work beautifully beside the bed.
Hallways and Entrances
Runners are ideal for hallways and narrow spaces. Leave some flooring visible around the runner rather than covering the hallway from wall to wall.
Consider the Room, Not Just the Rug
Before choosing your rug, measure the room and consider the position of your furniture, doors and walkways. Using masking tape to mark the proposed rug dimensions on the floor can help you visualise the size before making your choice.
