Rug Care

Rug Care

Proper care will help keep your rug looking beautiful for years to come. Follow these simple tips to protect and maintain your rug.

Use a Quality Underlay
An anti-slip rug underlay keeps your rug flat and in place, prevents bunching and creases, and helps it hold its shape. It also adds a little extra cushioning underfoot. Shop rug underlay.

Regular Vacuuming
Vacuum your rug regularly using gentle suction. Avoid using a rotating brush or beater bar where possible, particularly on delicate, vintage or handwoven rugs. Little and often is better than heavy, aggressive vacuuming.

Rotate Your Rug
Rotate your rug periodically to help promote even wear and minimise the effects of sunlight and foot traffic.

Remove Grit & Fine Dust
Fine sand and dirt settle deep in the pile and gradually wear down the fibres. Every few months, lift your rug and give it a good shake to bring grit to the surface, then vacuum. You can also turn it face-down on a hard floor and gently tap the back — the fine particles fall onto the floor where they're easy to sweep up. This is especially worthwhile for anyone with dust or dust-mite allergies.

The Traditional Beating Method
For a deeper refresh, choose a warm, dry day. Hang your rug over a sturdy rail and tap the back firmly with a flat paddle or broom head to knock out built-up dust. A short time in the sun first makes the fibres more supple, but don't leave it in strong sun for long.

Sprouts & Loose Tufts
If a tuft or loop rises above the pile, trim it level with sharp scissors — never pull it out. Fraying edges, loose fringes or damaged pile should be repaired promptly, before small problems become bigger ones.

Spills & Stains
Attend to spills as quickly as possible. Blot gently with a clean, absorbent cloth — do not rub, as this may spread the stain or damage the fibres. Our Rug Cleaning Guide has step-by-step spot-cleaning tips.

Professional Cleaning
For deep cleaning or difficult stains, we recommend using a professional rug cleaner experienced with your rug's particular material and construction.

Sunlight & Moisture
Avoid prolonged exposure to strong direct sunlight where possible, as colours may fade over time. Keep rugs away from excessive moisture and allow them to dry thoroughly if they become damp.

Choosing an Easy-Care Rug
Different fibres need different care – see our Rug Fibres guide. For durability, browse our wool rugs.

Rug Size Guide

Rug Size Guide

Choosing the right rug size can make your room feel more balanced, comfortable and complete. Use this guide to help select the best size for your space.

Living Room
For smaller living rooms, a 160 × 230 cm rug can work well with a coffee table and the front legs of your sofa positioned on the rug.

For larger living rooms, consider a 200 × 300 cm or 250 × 350 cm rug so the seating area feels connected and well proportioned.

Dining Room
Choose a rug large enough for the dining chairs to remain on the rug when pulled out. As a general guide, allow approximately 60–75 cm of rug beyond each side of your dining table.

Bedroom
For bedrooms, choose a rug that extends beyond the sides and foot of the bed. Larger rugs placed underneath the bed create a comfortable and balanced look.

Hallways & Runners
Choose a runner that leaves some flooring visible around the edges. Measure the hallway carefully before selecting your runner. Shop hallway runners.

Size by Size

80 × 150 cm
Ideal for entryways, beside a bed, in front of a kitchen bench or as an accent in a reading nook.

120 × 170 cm
Suits apartments, studies and smaller spaces. Works nicely in front of a compact sofa and is a popular size for kids' rooms.

160 × 230 cm
One of the most versatile sizes. Sits neatly between a sofa and armchairs with a border of floor showing around it for a tidy, defined look.

200 × 290 cm
Large enough for the front legs of your sofa and chairs to rest on it, pulling the seating together. Fits a generous coffee table and helps define a zone in open-plan rooms.

240 × 330 cm
Great for anchoring the lounge area in bigger open-plan spaces. Aim for the rug to extend past each end of your sofa.

300 × 400 cm
An oversized rug for large rooms. Most or all of your furniture can sit on it, with room for extra chairs and ottomans.

Round Rugs
Round rugs soften a room and work well in tighter spaces, since they don't need to fill the corners. Try one under a round dining table, in a bedroom or in an entry.

Measuring Tip
Before buying, mark out the rug size on your floor with painter's tape or sheets of newspaper. It's the easiest way to see how it will sit with your furniture. You can also try a rug at home with our Home Trial Service. For more ideas, read How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Your Room.
